The first Africlown-tour has been a great success!
Willem Hans Elbrecht, alias Billy the Clown, performed for several groups of children:

The children in South-Africa liked Billy a lot. Not every one was familiar with a clown. In the local Xhosa language there isn’t a word for ‘clown’. To translate Clown to the Xhosa children we used the word ‘Funny-man’. And a funny-man he was!
Although a little curious and sometimes afraid, the children had to laugh a lot. The participation of the children as really great. They helped Billy to open his suitcase, blow balloons and chased bubbles.

Sometimes it was hard to see the way some children have to live in parts of South-Africa. In the township they don’t have a respectable roof above their heads and nothing to do ore to play with. In the orphan-house the children don’t have parents or are abandoned and quite a lot are infected by HIV.
The handicapped people don’t have much as well. Most of them are dependent on beds or chairs and other people to help them with everything. And shocking are the  reasons why some are handicapped; their mothers were drug addicts during pregnancy, as small kids they were abused in the most horrible ways…

So it was sometimes hard tough to cope with what we saw. But we were able to give a lot of kids some moments of real joy. And their smiles made it all worth. So reason enough for a next trip to Africa!
